Sandwich Bag Pattern & Tutorial

Since I had a few requests for pictures and directions on my reusable sandwich bag, I figured I would try my hand at putting a tutorial here on my blog. Since this is my first, please let me know if it doesn't quite make sense or if you have any questions. I won't pretend to be an expert or a perfect sewer, but I do my best :)

First, you will need an outside fabric (I used a basic cotton) and a fabric for lining, I am using rip stop nylon found at JoAnn Fabrics. Cut a 7 1/2" x 13" rectangle out of both fabrics and lay them WRONG sides together.

Next, run a baste stich on each edge to secure the slippery nylon to the cotton fabric.  To keep them lined up as close as possible I pin the edges and then do one edge at a time instead of just doing to complete rectangle at once.

Next, cut your velcro to be about 5" long.  Lay the fabric face down and fold one end up (this will form your pocket), as seen above.  Pin your velcro "hooks" (rough side) on to the cotton, about 1" from the side edges and about 3/4" from the top.  The other part of the velcro, the loops (soft side) you will pin to the nylon side, at the top again about 1" from the sides and 3/4" from the top.

Once the velcro is sewn on (you can just straight stich around the edges or zigzag) you will need to have some double fold bias tape.  Cut the bias tape to be the same length as the top of the pocket. Stitch this bias tape in place, again using whatever stitch you are more comfortable with. i use a zigzag on the bias tape because it looks fun and helps keep it from rolling.

Once this piece is stitched on, next cut and sew a piece of bias tape the same length as what will be the top of the flap of the bag.

The next part is to sew the bias tape onto the sides to secure the pocket as well as finish the edges. You can fold your pocket as much or as little as you'd like, as long as there is still room for the velcro to attach to each side and close the bag. I folded mine up about 5 1/2 and pin it in place". You need to cut your bias tape to be about a half inch longer than the sides, or 1/4" on top and bottom. To sew the bais tape on to the sides, fold the top of the bais tape down 1/4", stitch down the side, and once to the bottom fold up about 1/4".

And now you should have a finished sandwich bag like this:

And there we have it. Please feel free to let me know what you think.

Please don't use this pattern for sales or for profit, I'm sharing this with you so that you can make products for fun!
